Harnessing Gamma Technology: A Powerful Tool for Locating Subsurface Water

It’s a well-established fact that gamma rays are effectively blocked by water, as well as by various soil types. This property is why many nuclear reactors are submerged in water—to act as a protective barrier and reflector, preventing the escape of harmful radiation. At Watertech Worldwide, we’ve harnessed this principle to create a portable, highly efficient gamma detection system that allows our field technicians to rapidly cover large areas, taking measurements every second.

Using this cutting-edge technology, we generate a detailed gamma map of the entire site. In areas where gamma signals are lower than expected, there is a higher likelihood that water or moisture is present, venting from deep within the subsurface and effectively blocking the gamma signal.

By identifying these low gamma zones, we can pinpoint areas of interest where further seismic investigation is warranted. In other words, our gamma detection method serves as an invaluable scouting tool, helping us to narrow down the most promising areas for more targeted seismic surveys.

This approach allows us to focus our efforts precisely where subsurface water or saturation is most likely to be found, improving both the accuracy and efficiency of our investigations. Whether it’s for well-siting or leak detection, our gamma system is a key component in ensuring successful, cost-effective outcomes.
